ADHD in Veterinary Practice: Structure and Support to Unleash the Superpower

ADHD is diagnosed in 1 in every 10-20 children and 4% of adults. However, underdiagnosis in girls and women is documented, suggested prevalence is higher.

Moreover, the fast-paced, stimulating environment of a veterinary hospital may attract individuals with ADHD – whether diagnosed or not. Yet the demands of such environment may, in turn, create challenges that are exacerbated by executive dysfunction and, in turn, may increase propensity to burnout.

Veterinary hospitals strive to deliver excellent patient care, but often fail to recognize opportunities to set up an environment that supports team members to thrive. For neurodivergent team members, particularly those with ADHD, structure, accountability, and empathy may be the difference in delivering excellent patient and client care and burning out.
