Technician Assistant Job Duties

  • Perform all duties listed under Veterinary Assistant
  • Give IV & IM injections
    • Admit surgery patients
  • Should be done by surgery technicians, or lab floater if surgery techs are busy
  • Administer anesthesia/sedation to patients
    • Sedation: Dexdomitor (IV or IM), Antisedan (IM) and Kitty Magic (IM)
    • Propofol Induction
    • Mask or Box Induction
    • Intubate patients
  • Monitor patients under anesthesia – under direction of RVT or doctor
    • Manually monitor patients (stethoscope, thermometer. Not using monitoring equipment)
    • Properly use monitoring equipment (SPO2, HR, ECG, BP, etc)
    • Recording vital signs in patient medical record (pre-op, during procedure & post-op)
  • Dispense controlled drugs
  • Place IV catheters in rabbits and ferrets
  • Maintain feeding tubes and urinary catheters in patients
  • Perform cytologies
    • Includes aspirates, skin smears, fecal and fungal cultures
    • Should be done by lab floater
  • Dental procedures
    • Perform dental cleaning
    • Take dental radiographs
    • Sharpen dental instruments
  • Perform a cystocentesis
  • Place a bandage on a patient
  • Apply Fluoroscein stain to eye
  • Perform Schirmer Tear Test
  • Other tasks as directed by doctor, RVT or manager

Technician assistants are only to perform the duties on this list that they have been approved for by the hospital manager.

Veterinary Assistant Job Duties

  • Perform all duties listed under Room Assistant
  • Draw blood from jugular veins
  • Place IV catheters in dogs & cats
  • Draw up and give Proheart injections
  • Give IV medications into IV lines
    • Do not need to be pre-dosed
  • Give insulin to patients
  • Lab Work
    • Reading ear cytology
    • Set up urinalysis
      • Get specific gravity and use UA Idexx Analyzer
      • Spin urine sample in centrifuge
      • Lab floater or doctor should read urine sediment
    • Run SNAP tests
      • T4, Cortisol, cPL & fPL, and Parvo
    • Perform progesterone and brucellosis tests
    • Spin and read PCV/TS
  • IV Fluids
    • Connect patients to fluids
    • Set fluid rate and VTBI on fluid pump
  • Use syringe pump
  • Take radiographs
  • Check fungal cultures for growth
  • Set up for basic surgery
    • Water blanket turned on
    • Proper pack set out with blade and suture
  • Run autoclave
  • Other tasks as directed by doctor, RVT or manager

Veterinary assistants are only to perform the duties on this list that they have been approved for by the hospital manager.

Any duties specifically listed under Technician Assistant should not be performed by a Veterinary Assistant unless directed by a doctor, RVT or manager. These duties include IV injections, cystocentesis and handling controlled drugs.
