Position Overview. The HR Manager will be responsible for the successful administration of people programs by overseeing the following functions: payroll, benefits administration, execution of our compensation strategy, recruitment, and employee relations/performance management. This position will directly report to the Director, Human Resources, and will supervise two HR staff.
Ideal Candidate. Our view of the ideal candidate is someone who:
- Has 3-5 years direct experience in HR roles and is familiar with employment law including local, state, and federal regulations
- Has supervisory experience, ideally in an HR role
- Has experience in sourcing talent for hard-to-fill positions, ideally in a multi-site environment
- Is open to traveling to locations as needed
- Is extremely detail-oriented, action-oriented, and resourceful
Responsibilities. The HR Manager’s core responsibilities will be:
Oversee the recruitment cycle. This individual will oversee the process for the company’s recruitment life cycle. This includes oversight of our staff recruiter to ensure timely postings, applicant follow-up/engagement, communication with hiring managers, and coordination of the offer process. Will be responsible for the company’s employee referral program. Will collaborate with the HR Director on opportunities to enhance the recruitment process, including the utilization of assessment tools and technology.
Collaborate on staffing model execution. Will work directly with field management teams regarding planning for staffing models to meet daily operational needs, including reviewing statuses and skill levels needed. Will maintain an understanding of current staffing budgets to provide recommendations aligned with the financial health and growth trajectory of each practice.
Oversee execution of compensation program. Will collaborate with Recruiter/HR Generalist on initial pay rates to support internal equity. Will make recommendations as needed regarding external market trends observed in recruiting cycle. Will oversee the process for annual increases, including communicating budgets, discussing pay rates, and ensuring accurate data entry. Will also oversee annual and off-cycle bonus programs. Will oversee the administration of special pay programs, such as shift differentials.
Oversee leave of absence and attendance-related programs. Will ensure a fair, consistent, and legally compliant approach to overseeing leaves of absences, including FMLA leaves. Will administer policies and programs directly related to attendance, paid time off, and unpaid time off requests.
Oversee performance evaluation process. This position will have ownership of the annual and 90-day employee evaluation process. Assists with the development of evaluation templates. Reviews/approves completed evaluations from an HR perspective in a timely manner. Provides education regarding performance evaluation.
Provide support on addressing employee performance and behavior concerns. Serves as a resource to the leadership team regarding employee relations. Assists with documentation of concerns as appropriate. Makes recommendations for next steps in accordance with legal compliance and company culture.
Oversee worker’s compensation and safety activities. Reviews injury report summaries and identify trends in both injury types and individuals with repeat injuries. Collaborates directly with workers’ compensation carriers regarding ongoing claims for resolution. Makes recommendations for training and safety initiatives to address concerns.
Oversee benefits administration. The Payroll and Benefits Specialist will report directly to this position. The HR Manager will ensure that processes for benefits administration are efficient and well-educated to our employee population. The HR Manager will take the lead on open enrollment activities to include planning and execution of annual enrollment in collaboration with the Payroll and Benefits Specialist.
Oversee payroll administration. Serves as the primary resource for Payroll Specialist regarding payroll-related inquiries. Reviews payroll registers for accuracy in data entry. Makes recommendations for ongoing improvement and efficiency in payroll-related documentation and processes.
Collaborate with the administrative team. In our collaborative environment, invests energy in connecting human resources activities to organizational goals. Makes recommendations for opportunities to continue to advance as an employer of choice in the veterinary field.
Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience required
- Three – five years of direct HR experience required
- Supervisory experience strongly preferred
- SHRM or HRCI certification preferred
- HRIS/ATS implementation experience preferred
